Celebrating four decades across the west

Since 1982, Schaefer Outfitter has called four remarkable places home.

Each one left its mark—shaping our values, our craft, and the gear we make.

To honor those chapters, we invited a group of artists to create original Wild Rags inspired by the land and the spirit of each.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming by Matt Tumlinson

The History

The Artist

The Design

Founded in 1982 by Cub Schaefer beneath the Tetons, Jackson Hole marked the start of our story and set the standard for Western gear as tough as the land it's made for.

Although his career as a full time artist began in 2014, art has been a common thread and constant presence throughout his life. Matt's work has been showcased in fine art galleries throughout the country and with collectors from around the world.

Meet Matt Tumlinson

Inspired by the Grand Tetons in the summer, with a natural color palette reflecting lush grasses and June wildflowers. Subtle nods to Wyoming's ranching heritage are woven into the design.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado by Jason Lohmeier

The History

The Artist

The Design

A ranching town with a ski problem (or maybe the other way around). The Yampa Valley in 1992 felt just right—a mix of Alpine and Bovine put a premium on versatility that's still around today.

Steamboat Springs Wild Rag

Known for his expressive work that captures the spirit of the West, inspired by the land and the people and wildlife who reside there.

Meet Jason Lohmeier

A stunning watercolor landscape that captures the spirit of the valley. At its heart stands a confident Colorado cowgirl, her loyal horse and faithful dog. Framed by an intricate border of wildflowers and native greenery, the artwork honors the flora and fauna of the region.

Las Cruces, New Mexico by Alice Leese

The History

The Artist

The Design

A move south in 2008 was driven by the desire to be closer to the working ranches of the American Southwest. The high desert brought a unique set of challenges to outfit folks in volatile and unforgiving conditions.

Las Cruces Wild Rag

Alice Leese grew up on the YT Ranch in West Texas, where she still lives and works as a part of the 4th generation on the ranch. Her southwest landscapes usually include cows, cowboys, windmills, wildlife, the oil field, and the people who live there.

Heritage Wild Rag - Schaefer Outfitter

Inspired by the history, landscape, and buildings of the region, the design weaves unique features of The City Of Crosses into the rag's border around a cowboy set in front of the Organ Mountains.

Heritage Wild Rag - Schaefer Outfitter

Fort Worth, Texas by Tess Lackey

The History

The Artist

The Design

Proudly home since 2017 and the cultural capital of the cowboy. Fort Worth brought us closer to those keeping Western tradition alive and pushes us to play our part in it.

Fort Worth Wild Rag

A printmaker working in Fort Worth, Tess' early adult life was spent working on ranches where she would document western scenes as a self-taught graphite artist, until a printmaking class in 2018 completely shaped her artistic focus on reduction and relief printmaking techniques.

Meet Tess Lackey

Heritage Wild Rag - Schaefer Outfitter

Created using reduction printmaking, layering six ink colors to capture the depth of the Texas landscape. Inspired by springtime in Fort Worth—rolling fields, longhorns, the wind rippling through the grass, and the iconic Stockyards' music scene.

The Yellowstone collection

Schaefer Outfitter was invited to wardrobe some of the main characters on the show thanks to our authenticity and legacy of servicing the ranching community.
